Site Analysis

This post covers the site analysis relevant to our scheme...

Day-lighting and Topography

Topography and daylighting were key elements to our design as they were used to enhance the qualities of the space. Terraforming was used to immerse the viewers into the Performance Space by creating a two meter drop at the entrance to the site. This dip only allows viewers who are on-site to experience the different moods and feelings created by the rooms surrounding them.

Daylighting was an integral part in determining the moods created in the space. The brighter areas were given a more introspective and calm feel while the darker areas were the more anxious spaces.

Natural and Physical Features

In order to preserve the protected trees this site analysis was particularly useful. By identifying which trees are protected and which aren't it is easy to tell where to build and where not to build. It also allows us to consider the current environment by designing our central amphitheatre with the protected trees as a part of the space. This analysis also covers the overland flow paths that need to be considered before designing to prevent any flooding issues.

Sensory Analysis

To create an environment that takes viewers through different feelings and emotions this sensory analysis was very helpful. It marks out the visual cues around the site as well as the current textures, smells and sounds. Sound was one of the most important elements from this analysis as this determined the feelings that could be created around the site.

This analysis also covers the circulation around the site which we decided to maintain as it seemed to be the best option in terms of directing students to the different surrounding buildings.
