Development Stage: Room tactility

This blog covers the thought process behind the different rooms and the qualities of the space which give them the specific feeling. The spatial qualities were assigned after individually researching each feeling as explained in the blog of the different moments.

Hyper-aware Dance Room

Viewers are lead into this hyper-aware dance room through a calm corridor. The calm corridor is composed of timber planks and vines, so that the interior of the corridor is completely natural with dappled light.

The main elements in the hyper-aware dance room are the angled copper panels which act as another mirror for the dancers. There is also a dance barre which is angled at various points and has a copper strip running across the top so that users can be more aware of their surroundings. The copper on the bar warms up with touch and also responds to the sweat on the dancers hands. After some time it would become clear which areas on the barre are held the most.

Excited Dance Room

Leading into this dance room is a boredom corridor composed of tall, blank and dark concrete walls with a single slit of light at the top. The emptiness in this space is what makes the corridor boring.

After walking through the boredom corridor, viewers enter an excited dance room characterised by the wavy ceiling, wall and dance barre. The wavy patterns observed here respond to the fast paced movement of dancers at their peak performance. The colours in this dance room are bright red, yellow, orange and green.

Observation Drama Room

The corridor that leads into this drama room is the long, windy boredom corridor characterised by its many turns. The completely white and light corridor along with the constant turns is what makes this corridor so boring.

From this corridor viewers can choose to walk into this 'observation' drama room which is composed of a stone wall with many slits running through. Since this room faces the amphitheatre, the people on the outside can easily see into this space.

Calm Drama Room

This calm drama room is given its qualities by the use of natural materials. The room is fully composed of wood, with one wall having a ripple effect as calm is associated with lots of natural material such as wood and also ripples and smooth stone. This room looks out to the protected at the back of the site and therefore has even more serene effect on those using the space.
