Cross-Crit: Master-plan 2

Updated: Oct 22, 2019

To break away from the rigid forms in the previous site plan we rearranged the spaces to follow the same gradient of porosity while going back to field architecture.

Overall site plan at 1:50

Starting from the bottom right, the amount of porosity and anxiety is the greatest. This slowly decreases as you walk along the path towards the drama blocks at the top left. In this scheme we included the moments created by the different moods by pairing opposing ones next to each other.

The first dance block features a "boring" entrance which then leads to a hyperactive dance room. We identified hyperactivity with bright, bold and contrasting colours and therefore decided to compose this dance room of really vibrant colours. The form of this block also aids in increasing anxiety as it is covered with glazing so that whoever is walking by can easily see into these dance spaces. The curved facade increases the sense of movement around the building to encourage people to walk through the rest of the site.

Leading into the second dance block is a "calm" corridor covered in wooden panels and vines. This leads to an excited dance room identified by the bright, bold colours as well as the jagged interior walls and many reflective surfaces.

Towards the top right section of the site is the black box theatre connected to the multi-layered, parkour foyer. This foyer is connected to the circular drama pods by a ramp, where the more introspective drama rehearsal takes place. These individual pods lead up to the bigger drama classes which sit on the first floor. The ground floor beneath is a circulation space for the rest of the students to continue on the same path through the site.

In between the amphitheatre sits in the ground with the multi media projection room beneath it. Again this amphitheatre is central to the site acting as a balance between the performers and the others who use the space.

At the end of the site, towards the top left is the introspective dance room which features one way glass so that the performers can see out onto the trees. In this way the gradient of porosity is changes from the bottom of the site to the top of the site from the spaces being more porous and large to the spaces being more dense and small.
