Iterative massing : Masterplan 1

Updated: Oct 23, 2019

The first master-plan is composed of three dance classes, two drama classes with smaller pods, a black box theatre with a foyer, an amphitheatre and a multimedia centre.

The blocks were laid out for the users to experience various levels of anxiety through porosity. As you enter the site, the dance and drama blocks are towards the right side, allowing users to see into the glazing on the ground floor where people are rehearsing. The more open and porous dance and drama rooms are on the ground floor because of easy visibility and access, while the quieter more solitude rehearsal spaces are up on the second floor behind a thick slitted stone facade. This was so that performers could rehearse without any interruption. The contrast between the all open glazing on the ground floor and the thick slitted stone on the first floor create an immediate difference in porosity. Between the two blocks is a student space for both dance and drama students, where they can come together and relax in the double height space before going into their own rehearsal spaces.

The theatre was set up so that it is the first thing that can be seen when you enter the site and as you walk towards the theatre you experience the dance and drama juices before getting to the actual performance space. This theatre is connected to a foyer space which acts as a student centre during the day and a reception space during the evening performances.

Next to the theatre on the left is the multimedia and staff block where all the theoretical parts of performance are taught. This was placed towards the quieter side to allow students to focus on what's being taught.

In the centre of the site is the amphitheatre which opens up to the performance space. The idea was to have this terraformed into the site so that there's easy transition between performance and circulation space. When performances are not taking place, this can be used by students as chill out spot.
